Concerto Competition General Information

As a current year’s entry becomes available, we will post a page specifically for that year. Please check back in mid-winter for the current year’s open competition application. A current Concerto Competition Application form will be available on the active year’s application page only.

Our juried competition takes place completely by video audition. We request an audition video and a second very short “About Me” video as YouTube links (see details below).

We alternate years for wind/percussion instruments vs. string instruments. For example, the 2025 competition was reserved for non-string instruments only, and the 2026 competition was for strings only. Please check the application page for the current year’s instrumentation as it becomes available.

Entry fee is $25 per person. Requests for waiver due to financial hardship may be requested.

Your music does not need to be in the public domain, but it MUST have available orchestral accompaniment. SCO will cover the cost of the winners’ orchestral music accompaniment purchase/rental and copyright fees, if applicable. We hope this opens the door to more opportunity for all.

Winners will perform their piece with Scruffy City Orchestra during SCO’s fall Cathedral Concert Series performance at The Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Knoxville, TN. They will also receive a framed certificate.

Winners must be available for the concert and a certain number of rehearsals or they will be disqualified (see Winner information and requirements below).

Please note the deadline for submission of all materials on your current year’s entry form. Your entry will be evaluated for completeness and you will receive a response within a week of submission. Judges will review all completed entries within a week of the scheduled competition date. Results will be e-mailed to all entrants when the judges have made their decisions.
